What is Pétanque?
Pétanque is a beloved game played around the world, and now it’s finding its home in the heart of the Roaring Fork Valley! While it shares some similarities with bocce, pétanque has its own unique style and charm, perfectly suited for our laid-back mountain lifestyle.The game is simple yet strategic: players take turns tossing metal balls (boules) as close as possible to a small wooden target ball, called the cochonnet. Whether you’re pointing (aiming for precision), shooting (knocking opponents’ boules away), or playing middle (a mix of both), pétanque is a game of accuracy, strategy, and teamwork.Here in the valley, pétanque is about more than just the game—it’s about connecting with friends, enjoying the outdoors, and sharing laughter under the Colorado sky. Scoring is easy: the team with the closest boule earns points, and the first team to reach 13 points wins!Perfect for all ages and skill levels, pétanque is a fun and welcoming way to experience the beauty and community of the Roaring Fork Valley. These casual meet-ups are the perfect way to get familiar with the game, enjoy some fun in a friendly environment, and connect with fellow pétanque enthusiasts. While we're not quite ready for tournaments yet, these gatherings are a great introduction to the sport and our community. Experience the excitement of pétanque with the Roaring Fork Pétanque Club, where you can come and play for free to get familiar with the game! We provide the boules, so all you need to bring is yourself. It's a fantastic way to try out this addictive and easy-to-learn sport, perfect for all ages. Once you've discovered your love for pétanque, you'll have the chance to join our club, where membership comes with a fee but offers incredible benefits and a vibrant community. Playing Locations
Explore the Roaring Fork Pétanque Club's welcoming playing locations throughout the valley! Each spot offers a friendly and inviting atmosphere, perfect for players of all levels to enjoy the game and connect with others.
Veltus Park: Nestled in the heart of Glenwood Springs, Veltus Park is an ideal setting for a fun and relaxed pétanque game. With its lush surroundings and convenient amenities, it's one of our favorite spots for our weekly gatherings. We utilize the horseshoe pit where we can get about 3-4 pistes going.
Sayre Park: Another great location in Glenwood Springs, Sayre Park offers a vibrant community space perfect for enjoying pétanque. Its central location and welcoming environment make it a popular choice for players. Find us on the Blake Ave side of the park at near the volleyball court.
Basalt River Park: Located in the charming town of Basalt, this park provides a picturesque setting along the river, perfect for a relaxing game of pétanque. Experience the welcoming community and beautiful scenery. We play in a couple locations here, on the gravel down by the river, and there is a small section of gravel cut out into the grass section perfect for a single piste.
